SUMMARY:Amplifying Voices | Parents with Disabilities: Trailblazers Disrupting the Paradigm
DESCRIPTION:Parenting is a funny thing! It brings you down to your knees\, all the while giving you the strength you never have imagined possible. For the second year in a row\, on United Nations’ Global Day of Parents (June 1st\, 2022)\, during Canada’s accessibility week (May 29th to June 4th\, 2022)\, we will be celebrating Parents with Disabilities by hosting an incredible night of speeches and poetry about finding the funny in parenting! \nParenting challenges us in ways we never thought possible. For parents with disabilities\, challenges also come from several systemic disparities\, which include lack of accessible housing and jobs\, poverty\, and facing stigma and attitudinal barriers. This means that we all have those stories of adversities that have made us cry of despair or scream out of frustration. Yet\, in some of those circumstances\, we actually chose to laugh it off even if it was no laughing matter\, in an attempt to have the last laugh! \nSpeaker Slam’s Amplifying Voices’ events aim at changing the narrative\, dispelling stigma all the while highlighting positive representations\, strengths\, and diversity. In order to do that\, we have carefully chosen the ten speakers in order to celebrate diversity and inclusion. \nWhen: June 1st\, 2022\, from 7pm – 10pm EST\, \nRegister for the event on Hopin \nAgenda: \n7:00 pm – Join us on Hopin for networking. \n7:30 pm – Show Begins \n9:20 pm – Final Remarks \n9:30 pm – Stick around and network with our amazing community \n  \nFollow @amplifyingvoices on Instagram for more info

SUMMARY:Unloved: Huronia's Forgotten Children and In Conversation: "Remember Every Name"
DESCRIPTION:When: May 29\, 2022 – 1:00PM EST (Screening) and 3:00PM (Panel) \nWe are thrilled to be a community partner for the 2022 @ReelAbilitiesTO film festival! We’ll be co-presenting the virtual screening on May 29 of the powerful documentary Unloved: Huronia’s Forgotten Children – for more info or to purchase tickets https://raffto.ca/schedules-tickets/ \nFor most of her early life\, filmmaker Barri Cohen knew her immediate family to consist of her parents\, two brothers and half-sister. But one day\, she learns of her half-brothers Alfred and Louis\, who were dropped off as toddlers at the Huronia Regional Centre\, a now-closed hospital and home for children with developmental disabilities. Speaking to the families and survivors of the centre\, she pieces together the story of her brothers’ lives through shocking stories of abuse\, humiliation and trauma. But these interviews also provide hope and light\, as the survivors support each other in their battle for recognition and healing. \nAfter the virtual screening\, join us for In Conversation: “Remember Every Name” – a virtual discussion moderated by Liviya Mendelsohn\, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence\, and featuring filmmaker Barri Cohen. \nReelAbilities Toronto’s festival lineup includes a variety of exciting\, touching\, and thought-provoking films celebrating Deaf and disability cultures\, as well as a series of events\, panels\, and workshops! We are thrilled to be a Community Partner this year on their May 27th virtual screening of Unloved: Huronia’s Forgotten Children and the post-film discussion event In Conversation: “Remember Every Name.” Visit their website to learn more and book your tickets! \nTheir social media: \nTwitter: @ReelAbilitiesTO \nInstagram: @reelabilitiesto \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/reelabilitiesTO
