The Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Neil Mercer, a cherished board member and beloved community contributor. Neil served on the CILT board from 2017 until 2023, bringing passion and dedication to every program he participated in. His creative spirit shone through in the beautiful designs of CILT’s 40th anniversary logo and DF’s 30th anniversary logo, which proudly grace our website.
His warmth and generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Here are two reflections from CILT staff members about the impact Neil had and the kind of person he will be known for:
“Neil was many things to people in his life, and no matter how someone was connected to him, he was an extremely genuine friend, and someone to turn to for ideas, insights and a positive perspective on life. He adored his wife Diane, was very connected to his family, and was a devoted cat dad to the late Elvis Purrsley (who had his own fan club!) and recently to Quincy. We met many moons ago when I was an attendant in his building and over the years collaborated on creative projects, partied, spent time with mutual friends, and kept in touch. The last time we chatted we mused about how my first month at CILT was his last on the CILT Board of Directors…and I wish our paths had crossed here for longer. I know his sudden loss is being felt by many and I will miss him a lot.” – Eva Miodonski, DF Interview Coordinator
“I was an attendant for Neil in my early years on the job and I could not have been more fortunate to cross paths with him. He was assured and assuring, conveying a sense of ease that is hard to convey. His energy toward his designs, hockey, family and advocating for friends never seemed to waiver. The respect he expressed to all was reciprocated. Although I had not seen Neil in many years, he always stayed with me, and I get to have the memories of his laughter, frustrations and dedication to his work. In our last conversation, he expressed such happiness in finding love and marriage, I can still hear that enhanced joy in his voice. In whatever way you came across Neil in life, you were left with a sense of wanting to have that same sense of approach to the spectrum of what life offers and try to emulate it for the better of everyone.” – Thomas Chappell, DF Intake Manager
