Disability Pride is…

Published: July 22, 2024

Disability Pride is
Being proud of your whole self
Accessibility
Acceptance
Awareness

Disability Pride is
knowing I am who I am because of my disability
not despite my disability
Realizing that physical changes are not me
Getting physically weaker does not make me weak
Taking on the weight of what others think is exhausting

Disability Pride is
Seeing mobility devices as part of me
They give freedom to whoever needs them
Reminder that if they are annoyed I move slowly that is about them
Isn’t this always the way of things?
I expect stares and to feel self-conscious but sometimes no one stares
Instead I feel freedome

Disability pride is
Working on feeling pride about being disabled
Doing my best to practice radical acceptance

I’m still working on it

Disability Pride is
Refusing to apologize for the space I take up as a disabled person
Without compromise or worry about being a burden
Remembering able bodied people don’t get the opportunity to experience the gifts that living life as a disabled person gives
