I know what independence means.
It does NOT mean alone.
When you say independence means I need to do it alone
You invite me to struggle
I hear you ask if I am allowed to be an adult who needs help
I get uncomfortable with needing to ask
Wondering if my reliance on others is okay
When you say independence means alone
You show me you don’t understand what independence really means
My independence is interdependent.
Honouring reality that no one can do it all alone.
We all contribute and care and have needs
and help each other survive.
Someone helping ME makes THEM feel good
I can do it, with help.
I am not afraid to direct my helpers.
If a friend was helping me move
I wouldn’t let them put the stove in my bedroom.
I am the architect of my own help.
It is not about alone.
When you understand independence is interdependent
you invite me to receive
and feel the freedom
that I exist with needs
and I belong
caring and contributing
to my community.
