Regarding the City of Toronto’s proposed waste plan, under which households would pay fees for household garbage: I agree that this unfairly targets families, who invariably produce more waste. In fact it targets any household that includes roommates or extended relatives. Effectively it penalizes individuals who, by living with several other people instead of alone, are already doing a big part to reduce their environmental footprint.
But garbage fees also penalize people with disabilities and medical conditions, who often use disposable supplies and packaging on a daily basis for their essential care and hygiene. In our household, we do our best to reduce waste: we fill our green, grey and blue boxes to the brim; we collect used batteries; we even purchased a shredder so we could recycle personal and confidential documents. Yet despite these measures, the fact remains that our household includes a family member with significant disability. And as a result, a lot of unavoidable waste shows up on our curb on collection day.
If this plan is approved by city council, our family will be forced to face up to yet another unfair fee… in a very long line of disability-related expenses.
