The ODSP Action Coalition is launching a six month campaign to highlight the short comings of the ODSP system. The campaign is a call to action to put pressure on the province to implement reforms that help not hinder the lives of people who live on ODSP. From January to June, each month the coalition will distribute an Action Kit encourage its members to participate in a monthly action to highlight the changes that we want to see. The ODSP Action Coalition is encouraging members to endorse the ODSP Action Coalition’s pre budget submission to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs by writing a letter to both the Chair of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs as well as a letter to the Minister of Finance calling on the government to
• An immediate significant increase in ODSP income support, to move towards covering the real costs of nutritious food, shelter, transportation, other basic needs and the additional costs related to disability. Rates would need to be raised by 24.4% to bring a disabled person’s purchasing power back up to the amount provided in 1993.
• Reversal of the cut to the Work Related benefit, and no more cuts to any benefits for individuals and families on ODSP until adequate levels of income support are provided. The deadlines to submit letters is Friday January 30th.
