Peer Support programs are facilitated by staff with lived experience and aim to provide opportunities for social connection, creative expression and support in groups and workshops where individuals can share their own personal
experiences, stories, joys and frustrations in order to relate to the experiences, feelings and barriers faced by other peers. While we have disability in common (and in a cross-disability group this lived experience can also be very different) there are so many other layers of experience that inform our identities. Our programs are grounded in principles of Disability Justice, including the principles of anti-oppression and of interdependence. We recognize that intersecting identities inform lived experience and welcome this experience in our programs.
CILT’s Peer Support programs operate within the Independent Living philosophy that states we have the right to take control of our own lives by exercising the right to examine options, make choices, take risks and even make mistakes.
