“The Centre for Independent Living Toronto has a long history of pioneering and supporting the Independent Living model of service to empower people with physical disabilities. This model is not just a philosophy, but a standard for support that we can all strive to uphold. Throughout my career, I have always worked to provide services under the Independent Living philosophy. The fundamental values of Independent Living promote and support autonomy, dignity, the right to risk, the recognition that the consumer knows their own needs best, and that the consumer can direct support in a way that best fits their specific needs.
Working alongside CILT, I have come to value their expertise, leadership, and commitment in promoting the Independent Living philosophy. Personally, this mission and these values have taken on new meaning and importance to me, as a consumer of these very services.
The Board of Directors, leadership team, and employees, offer guidance and direction to those seeking to understand available services and find those best suited to their needs. Beyond that, they champion and advocate for social change on behalf of and alongside people with disabilities.
I have always believed that the accomplishments of CILT come not by acquiescing to the current state of social services, but by striving for improvement, pushing boundaries, and at its core, amplifying the voice of the consumer. Congratulations on your 40th anniversary! “
